Round 1 Preview: Weekday Slots

By Coen Pearson

For those who didn’t hear, it was all action at Sunset Stadium yesterday afternoon. The Magpies turned around, and displayed that practice pays off.
At the end of last season, the Magpies Footy Club made numerous changes to staffing positions. Firstly, a new head coach was appointed, and then a new list manager. After finishing last, last season they received a ton of young talent. The number one draft pick, Ashton Rourke run amok, kicking 2 of the magpies three goals and earning best on ground. The Kookaburras side had also lost a lot of veterans to retirement but had a stunner of a trade period. Where does the season go? We can only wait and see.

The Lyrebirds put down the Koalas with five unanswered goals in a row in Q3. Greg Jimoth received best on ground with a ton of hitouts and a legendary goal.

  1. Sitting on the top of the ladder, the Kangaroos have had a magnificent season. They are 7-1 and 1 draw. However, they had a horror loss to the Platypus in Round 9. They still don’t have their star mid or their star forwards. There are holes everywhere in this young side. The question is, can the Roos continue their dream season? Can they beat the Wombats?

2. The ever consistent Kookaburras. This is their third season in a row in the finals. Sitting at 7-2. They are the oldest team in the competition, but they hold the record for the most wins ever. They have lost a few players this season, but they still are playing pretty well. Coming off a win over the reigning premiers with virtually no injures they must be feeling good. But can they overcome the Cockatoos? We can only wait.

3. The Wombats. The reigning premiers. They have had a rocky season, being 5-4. They have an injury list that goes through the roof. Now with another great mid out, they will have a mighty test against the top-of-the ladder Roos. But their defence has not yet been hit by the injury storm. That will be the decider on Thursday.

4. The mighty Cockatoos have climbed the ranks to reach fourth. Finishing 7th last year (out of 8), they have progressed forward, and with the help of a new CEO and Senior Coach they turned around. They sitting at 5-4 and have only lost one game at home. After having troubles last week in the Desert District against the Echidnas, the new agreement with the Heritage Council should make it easier to compete on Friday night.

The final matchup.

The Wombats have been troubled of late with lots of stars off injured. The veterans Kookaburras team however will have regained their full side. The Kookaburras are already in the finals, but the Wombats need to win to stay in.
